History of the Famous Jolly Rancher Candy
Owned by The Hershey Company, jolly rancher has been an American company of confectionary and gummi candies and taffy since 1938. Their confectionary items feature candy coated hard candy, gummi-stuffed gummy bears, lollipops and jellybeans, plus hard candy pieces, like marzipan and sugary crisps. They also offer a line of non-edible gummy candies and hard candy products. Their products are sold in most grocery stores and in many gift and department stores in the United States.
The candy itself comes in a variety of flavors such as: Banana splits, Blueberry Bliss, Chocolates & Treats, Coconut Care, Corn on the cob, Creamy Caramel, Fudgesicle, Jelly Belly, Marshmallow Fluff, Maltese Cross, Milk and Vanilla, Pear, Popcorn, Rice Crumble, Speedy Cash, Summer Infant, Tropical Blend, Watermelon Acai, and more. Popular candy flavors include: American Heart, Blue's Clues, Candy Apple, Blue's Cuisine, Caramel Apple, Dippin' Do, FunDips, Guava Blast, Guava Waves, I'm Lovin' It, Jelly Belly, Mango Blast, My Pillow Pets, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Pretzels, Scraps, and Store-bought gummi candies. The Jolly Rancher candy variety has various bags with individually wrapped pieces of hard candy. The bags vary in sizes depending on the individual hard candy pieces. Most bags have the candy name and a logo. Each bag has the amount of hard candy inside it. Occasionally, hard candy is sold in larger bags. The individual candy pieces are sold in a separately wrapped assortment.
There are several other varieties of Jolly Rancher gums available from different manufacturers. Some companies make chocolate gummy bears and gum drops. Other companies manufacture a mixture of strawberry flavor gum drops and chocolate. There are gum drops that taste like strawberries and others that taste like a combination of strawberries and chocolate. Most gum drops that taste like a mixture of strawberries and chocolate contain hydroxycitric acid.
The controversy regarding the ingredients began when the company began to add saccharin to their candy mix. This ingredient has been linked to an array of health issues including cancer. Proponents of the use of Jolly Rancher say that the addition of the saccharin was necessary because they didn't want anyone to know that the sugar in the candy was going to be added to artificial coloring and flavoring. The only time that the substance was mentioned in marketing material was when they discussed how the sugar free gum was similar to natural gum. Many customers were upset that they were being told that the sugar in the gum was good for them when all of the warning labels on the bag stated that there were no health benefits associated with the item.
After the controversy concerning the artificial colors and flavoring was released, the manufacturer decided to remove the artificial colors and added grapefruit. They also removed the grapefruit flavor. Since this change, the packaging and gum are printed with the company colors and the words "Jolly Rancher" are printed on the package. The company has also removed the "no artificial colors or flavors" label. While some customers have still not bought the product, sales have increased and the popularity of the candy has skyrocketed.
