Salt Water Taffy - Bringing Smoothing Texture to Confectionery

Salt Water Taffy

Salt Water Taffy is an American style of candy, more popular than its sugary counterpart, which was derived in Germany. Salt water taffy is extremely sweet, similar to jelly beans. This candy is made from a combination of sugar and water. The taste of salt water taffy is similar to a harder candy that is made with sugar syrup, but it has a richer, softer flavor.

Salt water taffy, also called sea salt candy, is a salty confection that is made by combining sugar and water. Its origin is in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Its chewy texture and smooth appearance have made it a popular candy among kids and adults. It has been a part of many children's birthday parties and has remained a favorite of children throughout the centuries.

This candy has been around for over a century and was a big hit with parents during World War II. On this same note, it became especially popular with American servicemen in the immediate aftermath of the major storm that devastated the coast of New Jersey and New York City. During the devastation, it was difficult for the bereaved to eat anything but sweets due to the shortage of salt in the ocean. So, salt water taffy was a welcome sight as it provided these sugar-crazed Americans with a quick sugar alternative. It gave a sense of comfort as it replaced sugar and salt in their diets.

The history of the Salt Water Taffy is closely tied to that of the major storm. In the early morning hours, Hurricane Charley approached the Northeast coastline. It dumped large amounts of snow and left the region without any electrical power. Consequently, most people were stuck inside their homes or buildings. The pull of these sweets became too great and, after a lengthy period of time, these desperate people resorted to what was essentially a salt water taffy production.

These taffys were often handmade with only natural ingredients. These natural ingredients included dried fruits such as pineapples, plums, apricots, cherries, blueberries, peaches and even raisins. They were combined in a pan until they reached a desired thickness and then were fried or baked in a special pan known as a fraleller. The entire process was then supervised by the Linden method, which stands for the French pronounceable form of the verb "to bake." The entire fraleller was baked under an open fire so that the melt-in-the-mouthed fats below the cooked foods would cook quickly.

When people began to discover the many different flavors of these sweet treats, they began to demand that manufacturers learn more about the production process and find ways to incorporate the flavors into the already outstanding variety of Linden cookies and Linden brownies that the company releases on a regular basis. As new flavors and recipes became popular, competition among manufacturers increased. Today, salt water taffy is found in the chocolate department of many grocery stores. There are also various companies that produce and market this product, many of which have web sites that provide information about the production process and the various flavors. It is no wonder that the popularity of salt water taffy continues to grow!
